I enjoyed reading your review of A Thousand Acres. I was interested to read that it was a book that you were able to set aside while reading it. My experience with the book bordered on an addictive book marathon. This is the first time I've seen your blog and will certainly be bookmarking it. Excellent organization and great writing!

Megan
http://www.meganjust.com

Jill:
Thank you so much for stopping by and commenting.

Brushing up on Lear isn't really necessary if you already understand its theme. The only issue I see with knowing 'Lear' too well is that one may be distracted from taking in what the author is attempting in her 're-imaging' of Shakespeare's play because they are continually looking for that which is similar and that which is not.

The main thing, for me at least, was even though she took the work, modernized it, and feminized it, the power of the theme remained intact. And because of that, I actually grew to have a better appreciation of what Shakespeare created.

However, I must reiterate, this book is dark, can be depressing, and (not to give too much away) has some disturbing subject matter.

Thank you again for coming over. And allow me to return the compliment by saying that I enjoyed visiting your blog and look forward to future visits.

J.C.

Thanks for your review (followed this over from the Pulitzer Project blog). I didn't realize this one had a King Lear influence. Interesting....might have to read this book sooner than later (though I wonder if brushing up on King Lear would be helpful?).

Happy Reading!
Jill
http://mrstreme.livejournal.com
