The Madness Continues

November 02, 2009 By: J.C. Montgomery Category: Reading Journal

What madness you ask?

I am extremely backlogged in reviewing books I’ve read, as well as getting to all the review copies I’ve received over the last several months.

So what do I do to relieve the pressure? I attend the bi-annual book sale put on by the Friends of the Washoe County Library.

Apparently shopping for books is NOT the way to make my situation any better. In fact, as it turns out, it is the perfect way to ensure I will never, ever, catch up with all that work and books piled up on my desk. [heavy sigh]

There must be a name for this. Some undiagnosed and unknown disease with which I’m afflicted. It’s the only explanation.

I must admit though, that I only bought fifteen books. Being that my average is twenty, perhaps some glimmer of sanity still shines and I am not ready for the therapist, or a padded room, at least not yet.

Here are my finds. If you’ve read any of them, I’d love to hear from you, so please leave a comment with a link to your review if you’ve done one.

  • Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
  • The Portrait Of A Lady by Henry James
  • Girl With A Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier
  • The Princes In The Tower by Alison Weir
  • Schindler’s List by Thomas Keneally (also known as Schindler’s Ark)
  • A Confederacy Of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole
  • The Kitchen Boy by Robert Alexander
  • The Curious Incident Of The Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon
  • Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton
  • The Dante Club by Matthew Pearl
  • The Boy In The Striped Pajamas by John Boyne
  • Ahab’s Wife by Sena Jeter Naslund
  • O Pioneers! by Willa Cather
  • A Room of One’s Own by Virginia Woolf
  • Babbitt by Sinclair Lewis

Just to make myself somewhat accountable, here are the reviews I owe this blog:

  • In The Wake Of The Boatman by Jonathon Scott Fuqua
  • The Day The Falls Stood Still by Cathy Marie Buchanan
  • Apples And Oranges by Marie Brenner
  • Guardian Of The Flame by T.L. Higley

And this is what I am currently reading:

  • Veronika Decides To Die by Paulo Coelho
  • Gone and  Back Again by Jonathon Scott Fuqua

This is what I must read as soon as I am able

  • Spooner by Pete Dexter
  • Notes On Democracy by H.L. Mencken
  • A Separate Country by Robert Hicks
  • Ravens by George Dawes Green
  • Two Brothers by David R. Jones
  • An Obsolete Honor by Helena P. Schrader
  • Bedlam South by Grisham and Donaldson

I am re-committing myself to my blog and my TBR. I am hoping by the end of next month I will have sufficiently caught up to actual join a book club or some kind of reading group, either online or locally. In addition, I’ve missed writing my essays. I have a few ideas swirling around and hope I haven’t lost my mojo. [crosses fingers]

Thanks for hanging in there with me, and I’m glad to be back!

  1. Oh, I feel ya with the backlog of books. I have 20 books on my shelves at home that I have received and have yet to read/review. I also had to start keeping books on my work desk instead of taking them home because I have run out of room there. Aghhhh!

  2. I miss you writing your essays too! Looking at your lists I’m glad I’m not the only crazy one. I checked out a ton of books from the library lately. Now I’m trying to figure out how I’m going to get to my towering pile. Happy reading.

  3. I’ve read Never Let Me Go, which I really liked because as always, Ishiguro surprised me. He’s just genius! I read it before I blogged, or I’d give you the link to a review. :) I also really like O, Pioneers! I love teaching it to my students, who think it’s extremely boring in the beginning, and then freak out at the end. I also like to challenge what they think about “older” unmarried women (you know, like me…ha, ha).

Whatever illness this is, I think many of us have it! :)
